How GLP-1s work

It was never about willpower.

GLP-1 is a natural hormone that controls hunger. The medication boosts it, so losing weight stops feeling like a fight.

You feel full sooner

Smaller portions feel like enough, and fullness lasts longer.

Cravings get quieter

Less snacking, less food noise, fewer late-night urges.

Blood sugar stays steady

Fewer energy crashes, so healthy choices are easier.

Will this work for me?

GLP-1 medications have produced substantial weight loss in large clinical trials, but results vary from person to person. Your provider will look at your history, your goals, and any conditions or medications that matter before recommending treatment.

What happens if I am not approved?

If a provider determines GLP-1 treatment is not appropriate for you, you will not be charged for a prescription. We will tell you plainly why and talk through what else may be worth considering.

Do I need insurance?

No. Membership is paid directly and is not billed to insurance. Many members use HSA or FSA funds. If your pharmacy benefit covers a medication, we can provide documentation you can submit yourself.

How quickly will my medication arrive?

Once your provider prescribes, the pharmacy fills your order and ships it directly to you. You receive tracking as soon as it ships, and your care team will make sure you know how to start before it arrives.

What are the common side effects?

The most common are nausea, reduced appetite, constipation, and mild stomach upset, usually early on or after a dose increase. Most ease with time. Your care team can adjust your dose and help you manage them.

Who should not take a GLP-1?

GLP-1 medications are not appropriate for everyone, including people who are pregnant or trying to conceive and people with certain personal or family medical histories. Your provider will screen for these during your evaluation.

Can I cancel?

Yes, anytime from your account with no fees and no phone calls. You keep access through the end of the period you already paid for.

The basics

What Is a GLP-1, and How Does It Help You Lose Weight?

The hormone behind the most effective weight loss medications available, and why it works when dieting alone stalled.

Optimized Women Health Guide  |  4 min read

The short version

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1. It is a hormone your gut releases after you eat, and it does three useful things: it tells your brain you are full, it slows how quickly food leaves your stomach, and it helps your body manage blood sugar. GLP-1 medications mimic that hormone and keep its signal active for much longer than your body naturally does.

Why it works when willpower did not

Weight is regulated by your brain, not by discipline. When you cut calories, your body pushes back by raising hunger and lowering energy use, which is why so many diets work for a few months and then stop. GLP-1 medications change that conversation. Hunger quiets down, portions that used to feel small start to feel like enough, and the constant background noise around food that many women describe tends to fade.

That is also why results in clinical trials have been so much larger than diet and exercise alone. In the STEP 1 trial, adults taking semaglutide lost an average of about 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks, compared with about 2.4% for those on placebo following the same lifestyle program.

Why women in particular notice a difference

Many women find that the strategies that worked in their twenties stop working in their late thirties and forties. Shifts in hormones, sleep, stress, and muscle mass all change how the body stores and releases fat. GLP-1 treatment does not fix all of that on its own, but it removes one of the biggest obstacles, which is constant hunger, and makes the other habits far easier to keep.

What it is not

The bottom line: GLP-1 medications help your body cooperate with your goals instead of fighting them. Paired with protein, strength training, and a provider who adjusts your plan, they are the most effective tool most women have ever had for lasting weight loss.

Compare

Semaglutide vs. Tirzepatide: What's the Difference?

How the two most prescribed weight loss medications compare on mechanism, results, and side effects.

Optimized Women Health Guide  |  5 min read

Two medications, one family

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are both once-weekly injections that act on GLP-1, the fullness hormone your gut releases after meals. The difference is that tirzepatide also acts on a second hormone, GIP, which plays a role in how your body handles insulin and stores energy. That dual action is why you will sometimes see tirzepatide described as a dual agonist.

Which one produces more weight loss?

In their separate trials, tirzepatide produced larger average weight loss at its higher doses. In a head-to-head trial published in 2025, tirzepatide also led to greater average weight loss than semaglutide. But averages hide a lot of individual variation. Some women do extremely well on semaglutide, and some tolerate one medication much better than the other.

How your provider chooses

The right choice depends on your health history, how your body tolerates the medication, your goals, availability, and cost. It is common to start on one and adjust later. What matters most is not which name is on the label, but that your dose is managed carefully and adjusted as you go.

The bottom line: Both are highly effective. Tirzepatide tends to produce more weight loss on average, and semaglutide has the longer track record. Your provider will recommend the one that fits you best.

Dosing

What Is GLP-1 Microdosing?

Why some women start lower and stay there, and what the evidence does and does not say.

Optimized Women Health Guide  |  4 min read

What microdosing means

Standard GLP-1 treatment follows a titration schedule: you start at a low dose and step up every few weeks toward a target dose. Microdosing takes a different approach. You start low, increase more slowly, and in many cases stay at a lower dose long term instead of climbing to the maximum.

Why women choose it

What the evidence says

This part matters. The large clinical trials that established how much weight people lose on GLP-1 medications studied full, standard doses. Microdosing is a newer clinical approach, and it has not been studied in trials of the same size. Weight loss at lower doses is generally expected to be more gradual and may be smaller. A good provider will be honest with you about that trade-off.

Who it may suit

Microdosing can be a sensible option for women who are sensitive to medications, who have a smaller amount of weight to lose, or who want to start cautiously and see how their body responds. It is also easy to change course. If progress is slower than you want, your provider can move you onto a standard schedule.

The bottom line: Microdosing trades speed for comfort. It is a reasonable starting point for many women, as long as expectations are set honestly and your provider is watching how you respond.

Getting started

Your First Month on a GLP-1: What to Expect

Common side effects, how long they tend to last, and the simple habits that make them easier.

Optimized Women Health Guide  |  5 min read

Weeks one and two

Your starting dose is intentionally low. Its job is to let your body adjust, not to produce dramatic weight loss. Most women notice their appetite first: meals feel satisfying sooner, and snacking between meals becomes less automatic. Some notice very little at all in the first week, which is normal.

Weeks three and four

By now appetite changes are usually clear, and the scale often starts to move. If your plan includes a dose increase, it typically comes around the end of the first month. Side effects can reappear briefly after an increase and then settle again.

How to Protect Your Muscle While Losing Weight

Why muscle matters even more for women as we age, and the two habits that protect it.

Optimized Women Health Guide  |  4 min read

Not all weight is the same

When you lose weight by any method, some of what you lose is muscle, not just fat. With GLP-1 medications, where weight loss can be significant, studies have found that a meaningful share of the weight lost can come from lean mass. The goal is to keep that share as small as possible.

Why it matters for women

Women naturally start with less muscle than men and begin losing it faster after menopause. Muscle supports your metabolism, your balance, your bone density, and how strong and capable you feel day to day. Protecting it is what separates losing weight from actually getting healthier.

Habit one: prioritize protein

When your appetite shrinks, protein is often the first thing to fall off your plate. Put it first instead. Build each meal around a solid protein source such as eggs, Greek yogurt, fish, chicken, tofu, or lean meat, then add everything else. Your provider can give you a daily target that fits your body.

Habit two: lift something

Resistance training tells your body that muscle is still needed. It does not have to be complicated. Two or three short sessions a week with bodyweight exercises, bands, or weights is enough to make a real difference. Squats, lunges, push-ups, rows, and carries cover most of what you need.

The bottom line: GLP-1 medication helps you eat less. Protein and strength training make sure what you lose is fat. Your membership includes guidance on both.
